PULSE Competition Team

The PULSE Competition Team is a dynamic group of dedicated dancers who are passionate about competing and performing at a high level. Our team focuses on developing strong technique, versatility, and stage presence across various dance styles. Members of the team commit to rigorous training, rehearsals, and participate in regional and national competitions. We emphasize teamwork, discipline, and artistic expression, providing dancers with opportunities to grow both individually and as a part of a supportive, driven community.

Rising Stars and Elite Team

Members of our competitive team require a higher level of commitment and financial responsibility. Dancers will need to commit to regular attendance at practices and community performances, with a willingness to dedicate extra time as needed. To be eligible, dancers must have a positive attitude, good behavior, strong work ethic and discipline, leadership qualities, good attendance, and a love for dance!

Dancers must complete the 2 day audition process and interview. Additionally, families should be prepared to cover associated costs, and for younger members, parental support is required.

Members are required to take technique classes (jazz, tap, ballet or combo), 1 tumbling class and their rehearsal.

Members will attend 2 competition/conventions during the season.

Requirements:

  • 2.8 school GPA or higher

  • Can not have more than 3 comp team absences or will be pulled from competition

  • Must take required/assigned technique (ballet, jazz, tap, combo) and other required classes (tumbling); good attendance required (can not have no more than 5 absences per class or will be removed from competition team)

  • Performance Expectations: 2 competitions, community performances, and studio productions

  • Required to attend any additional rehearsals needed

  • Required to purchase all costumes and participate in all assigned dances for the group

  • Must attend the Boot Camp 09/03 - 09/05

  • Account must be in good standing

Additional fees will apply when we travel. Remember, you are representing a brand. Failure to represent Alter Ego in the best light will result in removal from the team.

Rising Stars Level Placement:

  • Basic Ballet Technique: Understanding of fundamental ballet positions, basic barre work, pliés, tendus, and simple turns like pirouettes.

  • Jazz Skills: Ability to execute basic jazz steps such as jazz walks, kicks, and beginner-level leaps.

  • Turns and Leaps: Ability to perform single pirouettes, chainé turns, and basic leaps with proper form.

  • Coordination and Rhythm: Demonstrating good timing and the ability to follow music in various styles.

  • Flexibility and Strength: Developing flexibility for extensions and splits, along with core strength for stability.

  • Musicality: Understanding how to match movements to the rhythm and mood of the music.

  • Spatial Awareness: Ability to move with control and awareness of other dancers, maintaining formations.

Elite Level Placement:

  • Proficient Ballet Technique: Proficiency in complex barre work, clean execution of multiple pirouettes, strong extensions, and advanced footwork like fouetté turns.

  • Jazz Skills: Mastery of sharp, precise movements, advanced leaps (such as switch leaps and firebirds), and intricate combinations with a focus on style and performance quality.

  • Contemporary/Modern Skills: Ability to perform complex floor work, controlled improvisation, and expressive movement that conveys emotion.

  • Turns and Leaps: Capability to execute multiple pirouettes, advanced leaps and jumps (such as tour jetés and a la seconds), and turn sequences with control and fluidity.

  • Flexibility and Strength: High level of flexibility for advanced extensions, splits, and acrobatic movements, along with strong core and overall muscle strength for stability and control.

  • Musicality: Deep understanding of musical interpretation, with the ability to dynamically express rhythm, tempo, and emotion in performance.

  • Spatial Awareness and Formations: Strong ability to maintain complex formations, transitions, and precise spacing during choreography.

  • Performance Quality: Demonstrating a strong stage presence, expressiveness, and the ability to connect with the audience through movement.

2024 - 2025 PULSE Comp Team Contract

  • Have you checked the team requirements? If not, please read the list of requirements. Quiz your dancer on the requirements, if they know and/or able to properly execute the requirements, then they may be ready. Please remember that selection is not just based on one but many different criteria. We invite all to experience the auditioning process.

  • You must be 7 to audition.

  • Once you have auditioned and made the team, yes there is a contract that both dancer and parent should read over.

  • - You can expect to see improvement from your dancer in technique and performance.

    - Award Banquet (at the end of every dance year)

    - Community performances, weekend rehearsals and other rehearsals as needed

    - Opportunities to participate in workshops

    - Additional cost (costumes and competition fees)

    - Required apparel (warm up and dance bag)

    - The unexpected (schedule changes and things we can not control)

  • In addition to the Rising Stars and Elite scheduled class time the dancers are required to take their assigned technical classes and 1 specialty class. Yes, this means your time spent at the studio will increase. In addition you are required to attend additional rehearsals, performances, and competitions.

  • PULSE Competition Teams will compete in at least 2 REGIONAL COMPETITIONS (February - May) per year and 1 possible NATIONALS

    • Attendance and fees are mandatory if chosen to perform:

      • Revel Dance Competition and Convention: February 7-9 ($375/person)

      • Tremaine Dance Competition and Convention: April 5-6 ($360/person)

        • This does not include travel, food and accommodations

    • Other Financial Commitment:

      • AE Group “Spirit Pack” in which will include a warm up and bag that must be worn to all performances  - $150 - $175

      • Boot Camp Fee (includes “Spirit Wear”) - $110

    • Guest Teacher Rehearsal Fee(Oct - May) - $10 per group dance (if applicable)

    We will heavily fundraise starting at the beginning of the season to help cover competition and convention fees.

  • Auditions are held every year. Each dancer with the desire to compete is required to audition regardless of past competition experience.

  • Yes, we encourage academic excellence as well as other involvements that contribute to the development of a multi-talented, well- rounded individual. We are very proud of those who are able to continue their dance education in addition to being involved in other activities.

  • All group members and their parents are expected to represent Alter Ego as a team in a positive manner. You are to show respect for your teammates as well as your competitors. All members are expected to attend all parts of competitions and performances to support the entire group.

Bottom line is being in the group requires commitment, a lot of time, and additional monies. If you and your child have difficulty operating at a hastened pace, you might rethink your involvement with this group. We encourage you to talk to more than one source to obtain thorough understanding of what being apart of this group involves.
